About the program:
Brought to you by the Center for Early Childhood Connections in partnership with the Junior Center of Art and Sciencethe "Creating Art Together" or CAT groups will be an ongoing opportunity for children in Oakland to form strong bonds with a caregiver in an inclusive, nurturing setting. CAT families participate in hands-on, creativity-centered parent-child sessions that use artmaking, sensory exploration, and open-ended art focused play to strengthen bonds and support early learning. Activities are designed to promote language development, fine-motor skills, problem-solving, and joyful interaction. The creative environment helps reduce stigma around seeking support, increases accessibility, and offers parents new ways to support their child’s development and wellbeing.
Our arts-focused caregiver-child group will be held at the Junior Center's beautiful Lake Merritt location and can accommodate up to 12 families with children ages 0–5 at each session. Each week will focus on key aspects of relational development, including identity and belonging, recognizing and expressing emotions, communicating feelings, and co-regulation, helping parents and children strengthen their bond through shared creative experiences.
Research has shown that having positive experiences through engaging in activities like these with a primary caregiver leads to increased resiliency throughout the lifespan. With your support, along with several community grants, we hope to be able offer these classes for free so that everyone has equitible access to wellbeing and support.
